Toms Creek

Toms Creek

The Congaree National Park is a 22,200 acre bottomland hardwood forest in central South Carolina containing one of the last expansive old-growth forests in the United States. The Park is known for its biodiversity, champion trees, and unique hydrology. The Congaree River along with the Park’s two main tributaries, Cedar Creek and Toms Creek, supply water, sediments, and necessary nutrients to support the biodiversity found in the hardwood floodplain forest. The Toms Creek water quality monitoring station (C-072) at SC 48 (Bluff Road), is on the South Carolina department of health and Environmental Control’s (SCDHEC) 303(d) list for recreational impairment, specifically for fecal coliforms. This impairment is a concern to park management and warrants further investigation into the cause of the nonpoint source pollution (no point sources exist in the watershed).

The study in Toms Creek is underway where we are using a targeted sampling method to identify places within the watershed that may be sources of E. coli. After seven sampling sounds (typically 15 samples within Toms Creek watershed per round) we believe that the majority of the E. coli load comes from a small part of the watershed. Results as yet are not conclusive.
